EXTRUDED ALUMINUM APPLICATIONS TO TAKE CENTER STAGE AT ET ‘08

The Extrusion Showcase at the Ninth Annual International Aluminum Extrusion Technology Seminar and Exposition (ET ’08) Tuesday, May 13 through Friday, May 16, 2008 in Orlando, Florida, USA, will present an extraordinary selection of semifabricated and finished products made with aluminum extrusions. Each design featured reflects the unique advantages of extruded aluminum.

“This year, we are very pleased to announce that we have some exciting designs utilizing extruded aluminum that will be supplied from designers around the world,” noted Rand Baldwin, CAE, ET Foundation President. Some of the companies that have agreed to display their products include Conservatek Industries, Inc., Total Structures, Inc., NASA/The Boeing Company, Terra Group, Hydro Building Systems GmbH, and VistaWall.

Two designs of particular interest are the International Space Station (ISS) handrail produced by NASA/The Boeing Company and the Gorlov Helical Turbine (GHT) produced by the Terra Group. The handrail is one of the most important elements of an astronaut’s space walk. The aluminum extruded handrail is what keeps the astronaut connected to the ISS while working on a spacewalk. Extruded aluminum tubing is also used for the truss structures that link together the ISS and is ideal for space applications because of its mechanical and visual properties.

The GHT has the potential to revolutionize the hydropower industry to produce clean efficient energy, which shows its “green” potential. Aluminum is an ideal material candidate for hydro-powered turbine because of its non-corrosive properties and environmental sustainability.

The Extrusion Showcase is on the move this year and will be taking center stage at the ET Expo at ET ’08. It has been relocated to the middle of the ET Expo floor. “By moving the Showcase to the middle of the ET Expo, professionals from around the world easily can see what spectacular designs have been created using aluminum extrusions,” noted Baldwin. In addition, exciting applications of aluminum profiles from the ET Foundation’s Aluminum Extrusion Design Competition sponsored by Hydro Aluminum North America also will be on display.

ET '08 Program: Out of This World
ET '08, the Ninth International Aluminum Extrusion Technology Seminar and Exposition, scheduled for May 13 through 16, 2008 in Orlando, Florida, will feature a program that is out of this world. ET '08 is the world's longest running educational event devoted to all facets of the aluminum extrusion industry, including aluminum profile production, die design and technology, metallurgy, equipment, and product applications featuring the brightest ideas and freshest breakthroughs . Produced by the Extrusion Technology for Aluminum Profiles Foundation (ET Foundation) in cooperation with the Aluminum Extruders Council (AEC), ET '08 is expected to attract aluminum extruders and suppliers from around the globe, including more than 50 countries.

Lloyd "Buddy" Stemple, Vice President and General Manager at Novelis Specialty Products Group, is scheduled to address the gathering of more than 1,300 aluminum extrusion industry professionals in the Opening Session on Wednesday, May 14. Former astronaut Colonel (Retired) Richard "Mike" Mullane will be the Closing Session speaker on Friday, May 16. Colonel Mullane's appearance at ET '08 coincides with a milestone anniversary for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Both speakers will provide an insightful analysis of what the future will hold for extruders—here on earth and in space.

Addressing the timely concern of environmentally sound practices and cost-effective processes, Lloyd "Buddy" Stemple will deliver a wealth of information about the advantages that aluminum has to offer the automotive industry in his "The Road Ahead is Brighter and Lighter" presentation at ET '08. Since 1983, Mr. Stemple has held various managerial positions in the Engineering, Human Resources and Labor Relations, Operations and Sales, and Marketing departments at Novelis Inc. (previously Alcan). In addition to being the largest aluminum can recycler, Novelis is touted as the world leader in establishing aluminum recycling programs. Mr. Stemple will challenge the industry to rise to the opportunities that lie ahead.

As an active member of the U.S. Aluminum Association's Auto & Light Truck Group (ALTG) Committee, Mr. Stemple has addressed the pressing issues of global aluminum use in automotive applications and the increasing concern by automakers to lighten their vehicles to satisfy the demand for greater fuel efficiency. Aluminum use in vehicle design is rising fast. According to the ALTG, aluminum has now passed iron as the second-most-used material in new cars and trucks, second only to steel. Aluminum content in vehicles has been rising for more than 30 years in North America, nearly tripling in content to an average of 327 pounds for 2006, according to a study conducted by Ducker Worldwide for the ALTG. The Energy Bill recently signed into U.S. law includes increased fuel-efficiency standards for U.S. passenger vehicles. "Aluminum content in cars and light trucks will continue to grow, and aluminum extruders will play an important role in vehicle design as manufacturers increasingly realize the many advantages that extruded aluminum can provide for automotive applications," said ET Seminar Committee Chair James Sanderson of Aluminum Consulting - James Sanderson, Inc. in Huntington Beach, California. "We are excited that Mr. Stemple will be sharing his insights and industry viewpoint in this important market during ET '08."

Also on the program, a former astronaut will share his wisdom, humor, and excitement about space with ET '08 delegates. NASA will be celebrating its 50th year in October 2008, and in honor of that milestone ET '08 has invited former astronaut Colonel Richard "Mike" Mullane to speak at ET. Colonel Mullane completed three space missions, logging more than 350 hours in space aboard the Space Shuttles Discovery and Atlantis before retiring from the United States Air Force and NASA in 1990. During his successful career he received many honors, including being inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame. Since his retirement, he has written books, including an autobiographical story, Riding Rockets, which was published in 2006. Mullane will relate personal experiences in life and in space and will share exciting NASA video to illustrate the points in his presentation covering such universal topics as teamwork, trust, and leadership. His inspirational, humorous, and motivational message is sure to delight ET '08 delegates.
