A Non-HAP (Hazardous Air Pollutant) Coating for Extruded Aluminum
Don Algrim, Tracy Rajala, and David E. Lindow -- BASF Corporation, Michigan, USA
BASF has developed a coating composition using a non- hazardous air pollutant (HAP) solvent blend. This new technology eliminates the use of solvents that are known or suspected to cause serious health effects—such as cancer, reproductive effects, or birth defects—or adverse environmental effects. This new product replaces a product line that used five hazardous air pollutants, amounting to 8 to 10 percent of the product as delivered. The use of xylene, diethylene glycol ethers, and several other materials was eliminated. The new product provides improved application efficiency and quality, and is economical in a highly competitive market. At market projections, this product will reduce emissions of hazardous air pollutants by about five hundred thousand pounds annually.
