Filiform Corrosion and Results of Ten Years Natural Weathering

Judith Pietschmann -- FEM Forschungsinstitut, Germany

Location, climate and surroundings influence the onset and growth of filiform corrosion. European coastal sites are selected to test outdoor weathering corrosion behavior of coated aluminum profiles produced with different pretreatments, conversion coatings, and lacquers over 10 years. Tests indicate the best long-term, stable coating system plus pretreatment. Natural weathering is compared to laboratory corrosion testing, revealing details about the information value of accelerated corrosion tests.
