Retrogression Heat Treatment as a Means of Improving Formability of Aluminum Extrusions

Retrogression heat treatment (RHT) significantly raises aluminum extrusions’ ductility via induction or other localized heating. RHT principles applied to 6xxx and 7xxx extrusions allow alloys to temporarily achieve highest ductility state for optimum formability while providing for returned hardness and strength due to the effects of plastic deformation and natural or artificial aging. Successful RHT applications in products requiring severe forming are described.
