A Review of Recrystallization Mechanisms as They Relate to Complex Forgings Produced from Extruded 6061 Forging Stock

Robert A. Matuska; Kaiser Aluminum, USA

Recrystallized grain structure evaluations require understanding the alloy mechanisms and the driving energy components from thermomechanical process operations.  Alloy mechanisms are elaborated upon in a case study performed on a complex part receiving several thermomechanical process steps, resulting in multiple grain recrystallization throughout the process. Other examples of recrystallization mechanisms are provided to reinforce the mechanisms for several alloy systems and process operations.
