Prediction and Control of Subgrain Size in the Hot Extrusion of Aluminum Alloys with Feeder Plates

Xavier Velay -- Bournemouth University, UK

Subgrain size influences metal strength and ductility. Subgrain size evolution during hot extrusion of aluminum alloys are predicted. Microstructural models are applied to thin, semi-closed extruded sections using a feeder plate. The feeder plate is investigated, comparing forward extrusion with and without the plate. Temperature, velocity, microstructure, and pressure distribution results are presented. Die configuration’s influence and suitability of tuning parameters are discussed.
