Simulating porthole die filling during process startup is examined. To avoid expensive remeshing during a Lagrangian simulation a Eulerian description is used, but tracking flow front is problematic. During filling, a function tracking flow front must be convected through the mesh. Die deformation is calculated based on forces from the aluminum flow problem. Results are compared with deformations based on a steady-state flow.
