Solid-State Bonding in Longitudinal Weld Seam Formation

Simon-Peter Edwards -- Institute for Metals Research, The Netherlands;
Andrew James den Bakker -- Nedal Aluminium BV, The Netherlands

In porthole dies, metal streams are rejoined, forming longitudinal weld seams. Solid-state bonding and weld seam formation processes occurring in extrusion are investigated via thermomechanical simulation, independently varying strain, strain rate and temperature. The surface stretching concept in the interface is critical to quantifying solid-state bonding efficiency. The investigated alloys’ ability to form bonds, and results correlated with weld seam formation are examined.
