3-D Numerical Simulation of Direct Aluminum Extrusion and Die Deformation

W.A. Assaad, H.J.M. Geijselaers, J. Huétink -- University of Twente, The Netherlands

Extrusion die design depends on the designer’s experience, and die design by trial and error is expensive. After several runs dies may deform, leading to unacceptable product. Direct aluminum extrusion process 3-D simulation is highlighted. Billet and die behavior is predicted. A Eulerian formulation simulates material flow. Results illustrate whether the die deforms elastically or plastically, along with the die deformation’s influence on extrusion dimensions.
