Simulation and Experimental Investigations on Composite Extrusion Processes

Marco Schikorra, Erman Tekkaya, Michael Schomäcker, and Thomas Kloppenborg -- Institute of Forming Technology and Lightweight Construction, University of Dortmund, Germany

Composite extrusion continuously reinforces aluminum profiles to increase strength, stiffness, and functionality for lightweight profiles. Embedding endless high-strength reinforcement wires requires detailed knowledge to achieve acceptable composite development and positioning. Finite Element numerical simulation and profile geometry investigations study parameters influencing material flow stresses, reinforcement element positioning, and die design strategies. Resulting guidelines for tool and process design increase process stability.
