Butterfly Dies - Increase Extrusion Speed through Innovative Porthole Die Design

Tommaso Pinter -- Almax-Mori & Alumat Group, Italy

Aluminum extrusion Butterfly dies are designed with bridges formed into arched shapes (wings), rather than typical edged shapes. Innovative details in the undercut are brought together by opening external feeds to better support difference in profile flows, thus improving supply to exteriors and concealed parts, increasing productivity and porthole die behavior during extrusion. Butterfly die behavior is compared with traditional porthole die design.
