Effects of billet heating temperature and extrusion speed on degree of die pickup during AA6060 extrusion are investigated. Three types of die pickup are identified and analyzed: normal pickup, die line pickup and lump pickup. Observing fractographs of pickups showing local mechanical tear features, the cause of normal die pickup due to the die/extrudate interaction is discussed and the forming mechanism is suggested.
