Two-Step Aging Behaviors of Al-Mg-Si Alloy Extrusions

Two-step aging behaviors of Al-Mg-Si alloy extrusions are studied via tensile testing, Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), and electrical resistance measurements. Natural aging benefits strength after artificially aging low-Mg2Si containing alloys, while natural aging impairs strength after artificially aging high-Mg2Si containing alloys. Test results show final strengths of high magnesium-silicon containing alloy extrusions are related to natural aging time and temperature.
