Metal Flow in Extrusion with Different Orifices

Seiichi Nagao -- Sumitomo Light Metal Industries, LTD., Japan

Profile die design difficulties are mainly responsible for non-uniform metal flow through the die orifice. Investigating speed differences through thick-walled and thin-walled profiles, extrusion experiments using varying diameter die orifices are performed. Speed ratio depends on billet flow stress, and is connected to metal flow through each orifice. To observe metal flow inside the container, macrostructure of discard and FEM analysis are performed.
