Comprehensive Extrusion Automation for Isothermal Isospeed Extrusion with Guaranteed Cooling Rate

Madhukar Pandit, Thomas Heger, and Heiko Hengen -- University of Kaiserslautern, Germany

A comprehensive automation scheme for controlling all process variables is presented. Implementation is discussed based on iterative learning control in MoMAS®, providing cooling rate regulation and ensuring isothermal isospeed extrusion and minimum extrusion time. Profile cooling rate is discussed relevant to automotive and aerospace applications, affecting allowable billet temperature and extrusion speed. Experiences installing/operating automation systems for several aluminum extruders are described.
