The Effect of S and Zr Additions on Al Extrusion and Post-Braze Grain Structure

Frank F. Kraft and Cory Williams --
Ohio University, Mechanical Engineering Department, USA

Adding small amounts of scandium (Sc) to conventional aluminum alloys benefits as-cast grain structure refinement and retards annealing/recrystallization. A 1xxx-series alloy evaluation, adding 0.2% Sc and 0.05% Zr is presented. Extruded micro-channel tube is assessed with respect to brazing thermal cycle and varying cold-work amounts. Importance of preventing recrystallization and grain growth, and retaining pre-braze strength in cold-worked extrusions is demonstrated.
